How to choose your job sector - Margaret Buj - Interview Coach
How to choose your job sector Thereâs a common myth that you have to work a job to fully appreciate what that particular role in that particular industry will entail. This is patently nonsense, and discourages people from looking into how a job might make them feel, what it might demand from them, and ultimately if itâs the right choice for them. If youâre entering the job market or looking to switch between sectors, thereâs plenty of information out there to inform your decisions. Hereâs a quick run-through of the most common starting sectors you might have your eye on. Retail Thereâs plenty of misinformation flying around about jobs in retail thatâd put anyone off applying for a role in this sector. Jobs in a supermarket may not exactly be glamorous, but youâll be sure to get a reliable wage, and often an enjoyable blend of customer interaction, stock replenishment, and other odds and ends that take place in large retail companies. Upward mobility in these roles is particularly fluid: if you fancy a go at being a manager, this might be the place for you! Hospitality This is one for the social butterflies and chatterboxes out there, or for quieter souls looking to push their social boundaries in challenging, fast-paced yet richly rewarding environments. Ranging from theme parks to restaurants, these roles are customer-facing and require a sprinkling of real personality to warm customersâ hearts. Find a job in London in the hospitality sector and get ready for big smiles and bigger tips and lots of fun and jokes with new, like-minded friends! Construction Picture yourself laying bricks on a cold, drizzly November afternoon, and youâre far off what a role in the construction industry has to offer. Yes, youâll be responsible for using your hands, labouring, and essentially creating useful things, but this can range from building high-speed rail networks to arranging delicate garden rockeries. With benefits ranging from travelling the world to making great friends, this is a fantastic option for those seeking a role thatâll get the blood pumping. Social Work An increasing number of young people are taking up positions in social work and loving it! Another wildly varying sector, and perhaps the most rewarding in terms of heart-warming moments, youâll be responsible for young children, or disabled young adults, or elderly people all of whom have lots of fascinating stories and joy to share with you. Itâs a vocation that demands patience and wisdom but gives back in spades; if you feel youâve got a heart of gold, or are driven to make a difference in peopleâs lives, then this may well be the area of work for you. Itâs a struggle, narrowing down exactly what type of jobs youâll apply for. Too many people send out a blizzard of CVs and accept any old position regardless of their passions, qualifications or personalities. This brief overview of four common vocational sectors should hopefully serve to spur some thoughtful debate inside you as to where you will one day end up loving to work!

How to be happier at work -
How to be happier at work - Since you spend so much time at work, its a real drag if youre miserable the whole time youre on the clock. Do you need to love your job? It would be great if everyone could get paid to do what they love, but until you can achieve that elusive goal, what can you do to make the 9-to-5 more pleasant? What can you do to be happier at work? How to be happier at work Finish the drudgery first. Whatever you dread every day, get it done as soon as you can so that you dont need to worry about it the rest of the day. In general, try to organize and plan your time to suit your own needs. Its not always possible, but sometimes, handling the little things that you hate can make the day a little easier to get through. Stop complaining about what you cant change. Its easy to get caught in a rut and to complain ad nauseum about a colleague whos not pulling her weight or a boss who should have been let go in the last downsizing. However, complaining about things you cant change only contributes to your misery. Dont give in to the temptation to drone on and on about the negatives; instead, focus on what you can change, and spend your energies there. Make friends at work. Theres no question that everything is better when you have a friend in your corner. You dont need to be besties with everyone at the office, but having one or two colleagues who are always happy to go to lunch or catch a quick coffee can make all the difference. Give compliments. Look for opportunities to tell other people what theyre doing well; it will make their day, and will give you a boost, too. Plus, you never know: If you begin to pass around kudos in the office, it can affect everyones mood and perhaps improve the overall office culture. Dont fall victim to the myth that you can only help improve things if youre a supervisor or have authority; take initiative and you could really make a difference for your colleagues. Keep track of good things. Every time something happens at work that makes you happy, make a note. Maybe it sounds a little corny, but if you can remember the good times, it could help make the challenges easier to overcome. Take breaks. Theres nothing worse than sitting at your desk, staring at the computer all day long. Its bound to make you feel draggy and depressed. Get up and move around. Stretch, take a walk, go find a window and check the weather. Daydream a little. Mental and physical breaks can make a difference in your day and make you feel better, no matter what else is going on. Give yourself the opportunity for a new perspective and you may see a difference in your day Reward yourself. If no one else is paying making a point to recognize and reward your efforts, create your own system of rewards and treats. After you finish a particularly onerous task well, do something special for yourself. Find something redeeming about your job. Even if you really dont like your job, or the people you work with, try to find some redeeming features about how you spend your time. Think about how you can be even better at what you do. Make plans. Think about whats next. Especially if work doesnt make you happy, begin to plan how youre going to transition to something new. Review job descriptions and decide what youre most qualified to do. (Dont conduct your job search at work, though!) Start to plan how to add the skills and experiences you dont have on your resume. Update your resume. Plan how to expand your network and consider if it may be time to change careers. The more plans you make, the easier it will be to influence a change in your work life. Flexible Jobs Are in Tech, Consulting and Government
Flexible Jobs Are in Tech, Consulting and Government Jobs that let you work when and where you want have come a long way from sketchy flyers stapled to telephone poles. In fact, a new report from FlexJobs.com finds that âflexibleâ jobsâ"which it defines as jobs that allow telecommuting or flexible scheduling, and/or can be performed on a freelance or part-time basisâ"are becoming not only more varied but also decidedly more white-collar and even lucrative under the right circumstances. According to FlexJobsâ roundup, the fastest-growing category of such jobs is in government and politics. âGovernment agencies at the local, state, and national level are increasingly adopting flexible work options,â the report found, noting that federal jobs, in particular, are becoming more accessible to people who need or want a flexible schedule. A surprising one in three federal employees work from home at least once in a while, FlexJobs noted, in agencies including the U.S.D.A. and the Department of Transportation. Read next: How to Succeed in the Gig Economy If working for Uncle Sam doesnât sound like your ideal career, there are plenty of other options. Engineering jobs are next on the list of the fastest-growing flexible gigs. The category is more diverse than you might imagine, including jobs in civil, mechanical, architectural, chemical, industrial, and even nuclear engineering. Dell and Deloitte are just two of the companies looking for people, FlexJobs says. Project management is another hot category, with companies ranging from Xerox to UnitedHealth Group looking to fill positions. Ditto for communications jobs, thanks to the ubiquity of digital and social media today. âWith people communicating instantaneously through a variety of platforms, communications professionals are in high demand,â FlexJobs points out. Rounding out the top five categories for flexible-job hunters is the travel and hospitality sector, where people who want to work for a hotel company or a firm with a big staff of business travelers stand a good chance of finding a niche that accommodates their needs. Read next: 11 Freelance Jobs That Pay Surprisingly Well Although the expansion in the number of jobs available to people who donât want a traditional 9-to-5 schedule in the office, there are some conditions or drawbacks you should keep in mind when flexible jobs are freelance or contract-based: While your hourly rate might be high, you might not make as much as you expect if your employer only uses you for a few hours a week, and a recent survey finds that youâre far less likely to be eligible for benefits like health insurance or a 401(k).

Defining the Selection Process What Happens After You Submit Your Resume
Defining the Selection Process What Happens After You Submit Your ResumeHave you ever wondered what happens to your resume after you submit it? Many job seekers spend hours every day shipping resumes off to prospective employers without an idea of what happens after theyve hit the send button.Knowing what your resume goes through after it has been submitted is a mystery that many job seekers would like solved. A recent CNN Money article explored the process that a resume goes through at one major company lets look at the steps involved after a resume leaves your hands. The First Stage Making It Past TechnologyWhether youve submitted your resume to a recruiter or directly to an employer, it will likely face some form of technology before it is thoroughly reviewed by a menschenfreundlichs eyes. The technology typically uses a variety of criteria to help filter candidates. For instance, a company might only want resumes from people who have five to eight years of experience with public relations management. If this key phrase isnt on a persons resume, the computer system will not rank it highor it could simply immediately reject it.Its critical to keep this in mind as you filter out which information to include in your resume and personalize it for each position. The best way to ensure you dont miss this boat is to search for keywords like this in the job posting and include them in your resume. The Second Stage Initial Human ConfirmationIf your resume makes it through the technological test, then you may receive some form of human confirmation. In the CNN article, the confirmation came in the form of a phone call meant to ensure that the information posted on the resume was accurate. As a former recruiter, I used to call this the preliminary phone screen or prescreen interview.During the call, the recruiter/company representative also gets a feel for whether the candidate seems to be a good fit for the company by exploring salary expectations, relocation willingn ess and job travel capabilities or whatever may be the fruchtwein pertinent information that could potentially weed out the candidate as quickly as possible to narrow down the recruiters search results. The candidate could also expect this communication to come in the form of an e-mail. I always loved communication via e-mail if someone had a really standout resume, then I would just e-mail the candidate to set up a time to either a) chat over the phone, or b) schedule the initial in-person interview.Stage 3 Moving Higher UpIf you seem to be a good fit for the company initially, the recruiter or other company representative will likely send your resume to the hiring manager or other person in dienstgrad of making the ultimate decision. At this point, the resume is placed in the interview pile for the persons supervisor or the key hiring managerand the interviewing process begins. What If I Dont Get a Call?If you dont receive a call or e-mail beyond the thank you for applying communi cation, its possible that the company decided at some point during the resumes journey that you are not a good match. That may have been a result of your not having the appropriate keywords contained in the resume for the computer scan to rank your resume high enough to warrant a review or it could be that the first human eye giving it a scan couldnt find what they wanted or perhaps someone thought the resume was a mess. Its also possible, with thousands of people applying, that you just got misplaced in the shuffle. Some companies are likely to keep your resume in its database in case youre a good fit for another position down the line. However, if you know that your skills, qualifications, experience, accomplishments, etc. are a perfect fit for a position (a 100% match) and you didnt receive a call, I encourage you to take extra steps to be noticed. The CNN Money article revealed that companies also spend a lot of time on LinkedIn, sifting through candidates in hopes of finding in dividuals they would like to recruiteven if they arent looking for work. This is another critically important reason why if youre not on LinkedInfor some employersyou just dont exist. For additional tips and advice on resumes and titel letters, follow GreatResume or visit our blog.

13 Self Care Tips for Working Women
13 Self Care Tips for Working Women Its been a little rough lately not terrible, just not great. I havent been doing any of the things I know I should do to sustain my creativity and energy levels, and Ive paid for it in lack of focus, lack of patience, irritability. When things get busy, it can be especially hard to make the necessary time forself care. But we know that if we arent taking care of urselves, we dont have the resources to take care of the other demands on our time and attention, no matter how important they are to us. As the old Zen saying goes, you should meditate for 20 minutes a day, unless you are too busy then, meditate for an hour. So I decided instead to practice the self care I preach, to be wiser and brut and gentler with myself in order to be wiser and kinder and gentler in the world, too. What Is Self Care?Self care is care provided for you, by you, according to Fort Garry Womens Resource Center. Its about identifying your own needs and taking steps to meet them. It is taking the time to do some of the activities that nurture you. Self care is about taking proper care of yourself and treating yourself as kindly as you treat others.Finding the time for self care can be daunting with the demands of paid work, housework, homework, family, community, and even, for many of us, pets, of course. But have no fear Little changes can add to big relief in a relatively short time. If youre constantly worrying about work, there are tons of easy and even affordableself careactivities you can do to clear your mind. What Are Some Ways We Can Practice Self Care? There are tons of little steps you can take in order to care for yourself better.1. SleepMost often in our hectic vermodern lives, elevated stress levels can be traced back to lack of sleep. Lack of night-time sleep is associated with a host of ills, from heart disease and obesity to depression and anxiety, to lack of focus and creativity. A National Institutes of Mental study found the risk of developing depression was nearly 40-times higher for those with sleep problems. Recent research suggests sleep may be a part of our bodys natural cleaning and repair system. Without enough rest, our bodies arent able to heal from the stressors and daily wear and tear of our regular routines. So, how to get mora zzzs?2. Say NoOne way toget better sleep is to abflug saying no mora so you have more time to rest. Try canceling one regular evening event, just for this week, and create an evening routine for yourself or with loved ones if they will be impacted. Explain that getting more sleep will help you to be more present with them. In my house, when we need an extra dose of self-care, we limit after-work events to every other night for a week or so until were more rested. If you cant get to a flat-out no, practice saying some version of it that gets you the space and time that you need. Try, I cant give that the full attention it deserves right now.3. Turn off the TechTurn off screens an hour before your target bedtime. The blue light of our screens including television, computers, tablets, and phones - mimics sunlight and signals our brains to produce hormones that encourage wakefulness, so pull out an old-fashioned paperback to read instead. Make yourself a cup of hot tea, and set a timer for two minutes to sit in silence and just breathe. Try to lengthen your natural breath so your inhale and exhale are steady and even for a four or five count. Then enjoy your tea, which should be perfectly steeped after your short meditation choose something with no caffeine, or consider trying a specialty stress or bedtime blend One consideration to be aware of is that some people are sensitive to catnip, which is in many of these blends, and it may have the opposite effect.Try to head to bed a good seven to eight hours before you need to be up.4. Cut the CaffeineConsider cutting back on caffeine altogether during this time, to give yourself the best chance of restorative sleep. Excess caffeine can also lead to jitteriness, especially when combined with too little sleep and can exacerbate stress and anxiety. I cant start the day without my morning coffee, but I generally stick to just one cup. Try green tea during the day, and chrysanthemum tea, or chamomile tea before bed, and limit caffeine after lunch. Remember caffeine isnt just in coffee but also found in tea, soft drinks, chocolate, and other sports drinks. Even some medications have caffeine, so make sure to check ingredients and talk with your doctor.5. Just SitSitting quietly for a few minutes each day is good for you on its own, and can be especially helpful in managing stress. Whether its spent listening to your breath, or to a recorded guide, meditation trains your brain to calm itself, which can help to turn down all the chatter in your mind about that argument from earlier in the day, or all the things you have to do tomorrow.6. Wind DownYour body thrives on routine and giving it regula r habits and patterns lets your brain know what to expect next and prepare for it. If you start winding down at the saatkorn time each night, after a few days youll start feeling sleepy and ready for pajamas, a book, and a cup of tea without even looking at the clock.7. Practice Yoga in the MorningsIf you can, try to get up a little early at least one day a week and squeeze in 10 minutes of aworkout, like yoga or gentle stretching. There are hundreds of guided yoga sessions on YouTube for every level and every need. Your body and mind will thank you8. Stop Drinking AlcoholYou may be tempted when feeling stressed to unwind with a couple drinks at the end of the day. While this may help you to feel more relaxed and sleepy, as your body processes the alcohol, it causes your system to warm up, disrupting the natural cooling down of your body at night, and can wake you up.9. PrioritizeAt the office, self care can take the gestalt of prioritizing your must-dos over the many emergency fire s that call for attention. Make a to-do list, put your phone on DND, and if you have one, close your door, or if not, pop in your earbuds. What are the top three or four things that have to get done today? Dont write more than four, and rank them in order of importance. It can be helpful to make an Eisenhower Matrix, also called a Priority or 4x4 Matrix. To make an Eisenhower matrix, draw a + in the middle of a piece of paper. Along the left side, at the bottom write Not Important, and at the top write Important along the top edge of the paper, mark the left as Urgent, and the right, Not Urgent. Put each of your four to-do list items into one packung. You only get one. The thing that is in the Important and Urgent box is your Number One Top Priority for today. Now, flip your to-do list over, and on the reverse side, write the Number One Top Priority, and break into smaller discrete tasks.10. Cut Down on EmailsEmail can be overwhelming, but you dont have to tackle it all in one day ju st learn how to manage your inbox. Open your email and immediately make one folder titled Look at Today and one titled Look at This Week. Based only on the subject lines, quickly go through and moved each email into one of your folders, and delete any obvious junk. Set an away message saying that youll get back in touch within the week.11. Walk AwayGet up and step away from your desk at least once a day. It hardly matters what you do, just so long as you give yourself a few minutes break. Go get a cup of coffee or a glass of water. Stretch your arms over your head. Take a walk to pop in and say hello to your work bff. Go stand in the parking lot for a minute and get some sun. Whatever you do, just take at least a minute away from your desk to check in with yourself. Are you staying hydrated? Breathing enough? When were feeling stress, many of us have a tendency to hold our breath. Take a few deep breaths, in for a count of four or five, and out for the same count.12. Go out for Lunc hOkay, okay. This one does involve spending money. But its money you wouldve spent anyway The important thing about this one is whereyou spend the money, and how. Make sure you get up and go eat lunch for an hour or so away from your desk and electronics. Eat something that makes you feel good to eat, and that will stave off the mid-afternoon slump. Aim for a good mix of lean protein and complex carbohydrates. A turkey sandwich with lettuce, tomato, and sprouts is a good and easy bet Dont eat at your desk, and if at all possible, leave the office. Go zustrom that tiny errand that is nagging at you. Get yourself a frappe at your favorite coffee shop. Before you head back in, soak up another minute in the fresh air and sun.13. Tidy Up and Plan AheadFifteen minutes before you leave, clean up your desk, put your notes and files away where you can readily find them in the morning. Make yourself a note of where you left off on a project, so you can easily get back into the swing tomorrow. Five minutes before you leave, write down your four item to-do list for tomorrow.Remember that self care starts with taking care of the physical bodies were walking around in each day, but it doesnt end there. Self care is about mindfully doing the thing that most and best supports your well-being. That might mean a bubble bath and a glass of wine at the end of the day, treating yourself to something special to help you get through a rough week, and saying no when you need to.Remember that theres no way you can get it all done, take care of your family and your work if youre running on fumes. Take the time to recharge and set boundaries as necessary, guilt-free Youll be more refreshed and more present for the times that really matter.--Kiyomi Appleton Gaines writes about work, life, culture, and fairy tales.
